The corporate culture was on of the good old boy network. It was
apparent that you needed to be on the male perspective to achieve
advancement. The director of Human Resources was a woman who graduated
with a degree in Finance and was bidding her time for advancement in
the company in another department. After she gained her new position
at V.P. of Financing her replacement was a male manager of field Labor
Relations with no experience in Human Resources, benefits, or
retirement benefits. It was apparent that the company did not think
the HR department warranted a qualified person the lead. The hours
were normally 8 to 5pm except during open enrollment. Benefits
packages would be assembled and send to the respective locations nation
wide for 7,000 employees. Employees were expected to ensure that the
job was completed on time and accurately for errors were not
tolerated. There was an air of team work during this time when
normally there would not be one. The dress code was progressive and
allowed for casual dress on Fridays. However, jeans, shorts, or tennis
shoes were not allowed. I have found that if employees are comfortable
they perform better and get more work done. The rest of the week
demanded the normal suits, dresses with nylons and dress shoes. I
advanced rapidly after arrival and found that I was happy with where I
had advanced to; however, I watched the people around me and felt that
there was a limit to the possibilities available in the department.
There simply was no where to go after you reached your potential. I
did see one person move outside the HR department to accounting. She
was released within 6 months of her transfer. The company was lacking
in diversity. 99 percent of the employees were Caucasian and 78
percent were male. Most of the women were in front office, secretary,
human resources, payroll and finance. The management was predominately
male with one female officer. I could see that the glass ceiling
existed when the director of HR was advanced to the Finance V.P. that
it was a token position and she behaved as a male in her thought
processes, ruthless and without regard to whom she had to unseat to
achieve her desire. Perspective of her boss was very apparent. My job
as the benefits coordinator was to answer calls from employees from the
6 locations nation wide, salesman and HR contacts. Researching and
resolving benefits questions including flexible spending accounts.
Submitted employee benefits deduction changes to payroll and providing
a listing to the locations to cross check the medical deductions for
their respective employees. I administered the self pay insurance
premiums and transferred the employee elections to the indemnity
carrier. I maintained the HRIS system for over 7,000 employees,
processing open enrollment and family status changes in compliance with
Section 125. I developed and revised documentation for job processes
and communicated with the locations for implementation. I trained and
supervised temporary employees during open enrollment and special
detail tasks. I provided administrative guidance for new Human
Resources representatives in the field and developed more efficient
steps the weekly processes of the job.
