I was a Media Planner and/or Assistant Media Planner for J. Walter
Thompson for almost two years before leaving to attend graduate school.
The company, like most advertising firms in Manhattan, had a very high
rate of turnover. When I left, I was one of the most senior members of
the media dept. in terms of time with the agency. Again, as with most ad
firms in NYC, I was able to secure promotions and raises only when I had
competing job offers. Despite the very long hours (9am to anywhere from 7
to 11 pm) and low pay to begin with, the work was challenging and
interesting. The corporate culture is lacking, but made up for by
interesting coworkers and a business casual dress code. Another nice
perk: when you are in the office after 8 pm, the company gives you $10
for dinner and pays for a cab home.
