We are a solid company. However, as a female or other minority, it can
be a bit difficult because we are not very diverse. We are a naval
architectual/marine engineering firm, and for whatever reason, that
usually means our hiring pool is about 80% white male. We try to build
a more diverse employment base, but it is difficult. Also, we hire many
from the military, so that mindset of both military and engineer
mentality can be challenging. Currently, we are experiencing a morale
issue, but it seems to largely stem from a communication gap and the
general distrust of business leadership now prevalent in our society.
Highly educated people come with highly educated issues. In general,
most people here are good quality and hard workers, but they can also be
somewhat closed off and not overly receptive to the new guy. While we
do not have issues with sexual harassment, equality is a bit more of a
struggle. Also, while they aren't much for back-patting, a good, solid
job is recognized. We offer a generous benefits package, and salaries
are strong, but that isn't always enough to keep the young employees.
We are business dress, which doesn't always seem necessary, especially
for those who don't interact with clients. We are wrestling with
meeting the needs of our workforce. We need the work experience and job
contacts of our older, firmly entrenched, population. However, how do
we build up and incentivize our young population when opportunity for
advancement is slow? Gov't contracting is a different animal. You need
to be flexible in many ways.
