This definitely qualifies as the "job from hell." I was hired at this
environmental engineering company as a technical writer, but I did no
writing, and very little editing. The company had no idea of how to use
a technical writer in her professional capacity, so I was treated mostly
as an odd jobs clerical assistant. If they disagreed with editing that
I did do, instead of asking me for my reasons or discussing the project
with me, they'd take out my corrections, send out the document with
mistakes intact, then lodge a complaint about me with my boss. When the
client was displeased with a mistake-ridden, disorganized document, I
would be blamed. No one ever discussed any "problems" with me. Instead
they indulged in gossip. The company was very disorganized and sloppy.
Company culture consisted of gossip and backstabbing. Favoritism was
rife, and turnover was high. And the salary was $10,000 below the
average salary for my position. It got to the point where my stomach
would roil every morning as I walked up to the door. I found out that
other employees also became ill at the thought of coming to work, but
they were too afraid of getting fired to speak up. I also discovered
that the tech writer before me quit after two months because she was
treated more as a receptionist and typist than as a professional.
