International Paper is a great place to work if you are career
oriented, understand office politics and are willing to play, work long
hours, only do those things visible to your immediate supervisor to
show that you are making progress (whether or not you actually
accomplish your goals)...just as long as you are in your position 2
years and have everything in place to show that you are making changes,
then you are promotable. It is not until after you are promoted and
another person comes into this position that more change comes about to
correct the previous person's actions, thus creating a need within the
company that this position is a necessary position. If you are not
willing to work long hours within the corporate culture, work through
lunch breaks, hang out with your coworkers on the weekends and
holidays, put your family second, you may not succeed if you are not
willing to let IP become your life. At the same time, IP is truly
trying to become more humanized within their culture. John Farraci is a
very smart man but lacks greatly in the people skill areas. He is more
comfortable working with figures than with people. However, he does
employee managers who do have the people skills and act on his behalf.
My 12 years at IP were hard working ones. Many of my co-workers are
life-long friends. When my position was eliminated due to Functional
Fast, my boss treated me badly. It was as though it made him feel
better if he could humiliate me (giving him a reason for my leaving).
However, the severance package was a good package and those who knew me
allowed me to leave with dignity in tact. Actually, my manager treated
me no differently than he did others on a daily basis and who just made
excuses for his bad behavior, rather than deal with him. No one was up
to that task! Regardless of his behavior toward me, I enjoyed my
employment with International Paper and still believe it is a good
place to work. I believe there is a genuine continual effort to create
a better working environment.
