Can be a wonderful experience in "doing good and doing well," truly
unique mission to provide financing and advisory services to private
sector companies in developing countries. Hours are long, but nothing
compared to private sector investment banking although there can be
extensive international travel.
On the downside.... extremely "political" atmosphere. Who you know and
who supports you is often far more important than the quality of your
work. Despite a genuinely international workforce, true diversity is in
its infancy and IFC lags the developed-world private sector in
addressing gender and racial diversity issues honestly and openly.
The "glass ceiling" is alive and well.
A rotational entry-level program has made moving departments somewhat
easier, but there is very little follow-through or career management.
You really have to take care of your own career and latch onto people
who can help. Increasing emphasis on field assignments outside
Washington as a requirement for advancement. This policy is somewhat at
odds with an increase in hiring local staff rather than paying expensive
expatriate packages to international staff.
