The company appears to be doing well. Job security should really not be
an issue as long as you are a competent employee. They are the major
player along the Wasatch Front which is due to the fact that they are
vertically integrated (Hospitals, Doctors and Health Plans). If they
were horizontally integrated, like HCA (who is also in the area and
seemingly doing well) I believe the company would have to take a
serious look at the way they interact with physicians and health plans.
Because IHC has all of these at their disposal they have an "I don't
need you because I'm big and powerful" attitude. They have estranged
many physicians by this attitude, and I think it speeks poorly for the
company. If they did not own the Health Plans, they would also have to
focus more on customer oriented service because they would have to get
health plan companies to contract with them. As it is, IHC has the
luxury of self-referral through their health plans. I think that
vertical integration can be a good thing with respect to health care
costs, but IHC needs to loose some iron from their fist.
