Inova Health System is supposed to be a "not-for-profit" health system,
but is constantly criticized by its staff and community residents
(especially Alexandria, VA) for its obscene levels of annual profits,
reducing and shifting costs to employees and patients for all their
insurance and regulatory woes, and hyping services that they can't
deliver across the system.
The culture is "white, white, and more white" which is ironic
considering the diverse population it serves. Persons of color are hired
into management positions if they speak with a British accent. For
example, upper management news profiles ask about what car the person
currently drives, instead of what the leadership brings to the community.
They cannot meet the EEOC local requirements for hiring (metro. DC), so
they choose to risk their government funds instead. But, they hype
their best places for women to work "awards" or making some 10 best U.S.
hospitals rating that is an industry-sponsored sham using smoke and
mirrors. (You'll see the Top 10 rating also posted by the most obscure
hospitals nation wide.)
Opportunities for advancement are clearly unfair, and the climate of
fear initiated by the untrained and mostly paranoid managers is high.
Typical white standards are applied to every job by typical upper middle
class whites who wouldn't know a "diverse culture" if it moved next door
to them. The "racial syrup" is also thick here. Turn you back and you
get your own "spear chucked" at you, if you catch my drift.
Hours in any health system mean that unless you get overtime, you
average about $3.50/hr. Dress code mostly doesn't apply since hospital
garb is issued, except for the wanabees in suits and other management.
I would seriously advise to seek any job at Inova Alexandria Hospital
(long community hhistory before it became another Inova site) and maybe
Fairfax, but stay away from Fair Oaks Hospital. It is centered in the
most white, ethnocentric area in northern VA. Plus the care patients
get stinks and the place is always in crisis and trying to reduce in-
fighting inside and across departments.
Good luck, you'll need it - Inova is almost all there is in northern VA.
