I was approached and invited to apply for the above internal position by
my then Manager. Later I was advised that other candidates had similarly
been approached, (4 candidates in total). My first interview was with 2
Senior Managers (in our International HO near London). The interview was
intensive but fairly relaxed in style. Despite an environment of quick-
fire questions, spanning a 2.5 hour period, I enjoyed the experience. In
terms of questions asked - the vast majority were 'experience' based -
questioning my management style.
The second stage of the recruitment process was that I was to spend 5
working days in Italy (in-the-field), gaining a brief overview
understanding of the market and the business environment. Following
this, I completed a SWOT analysis which was presented (in written form)
to the decision makers. Following this, I was invited to attend another
interview. This time, it was a totally off-site, one-to-one meeting with
the Senior Manager, to whom my previous interviewers reported. This was
an interesting interview as from the outset, I was advised that he
didn't think that I would 'fit the bill' and so I spent the next 2-
hours, convincing him that I was 'right for the post' while he
continually intervened with negative, but not hostile, comment.
Ultimately, I got the job.
My original recruitment process to join Imperial, almost 12-years ago,
(as an externally recruited manager) was similarly a long and difficult
process - I particiapted in a 3-day assessment centre with 9 other
individuals but the numbers involved, decreased during the 3-day period
to the point that by lunchtime on day 3, there were only 3 potential
candidates remaining. The 3-day assessment process was intensive and
extremely stressful (mainly due to the fact that the assessment panel
were extremely hostile). The process involved various team-working
situations, role-plays and discussion groups and ultimately ended with 2
separate, again fairly hostile, interviews.
Despite the fact that the assessment process was not enjoyable, having
achieved the desired result gave me a sense of tremendous success and
personal confidence thus allowing me to join the company with a feeling
that I 'could do the job'. In my view, if the recruitment process is
made easy, the interviewee enjoys no sense of achievement !!
