Although I joined Imperial Tobacco in 1991, my career didn't take any
forward leaps until 12-months ago as a consequence of a 'glass ceiling'
(old boys club) culture. In effect, if you didn't play politics, (give
the right answer to the right person), you were outcast and your career
suffered. The companies culture has changed (a little) and nowadays
honest answers are more appreciated (by some). Working honestly and for
the constant good of the company is rarely appreciated and so leads to
frustration but one continues, in the hope that eventually the 'old boys
club' will be replaced with a more straight-forward management style.
Along with a slowly changing company culture, the company's dress code
has, in recent years, become more relaxed. Gone are the 'pin stripe'
(city) suits, replaced with a smart but casual mode of acceptable
business dress. Hours of work are soley dependant on the motivation of
individuals and their personal desire to succeed and make a difference.
E.G. Although I work an average 12-14 hour day, I have colleagues who
work no more than the minimum required - different strokes. Sadly, hours
of work (commitment) and recompense/reward/career development generally
appear to have no relationship.
