First, two big things to note:
- History in court. In the spring of 2001, they were in court over
federal tax
problems. They had already been to court before over ERISA violations.
Several
former employees are owed thousands of dollars in back payments for
their
401(k)s.
- Behavior of management. Most employees have been there either since
the
company began or for fewer than two years. They have a habit of hiring
and firing
with no apparent cause. Many horror stories circulate about how it
happened to
different people.
- Casual dress code. One of the programmers generally showed up in
sweats.
- Non-smoking atmosphere. Only a good point if you're a non-smoker, I
suppose.
- Excellent benefits. Company paid for most if not all of your health
benefits, and it
was a good program. This may or may not be related to their business,
which
involves software that is in some cases used by insurance companies.
- Flextime. As long as you worked a full day, you were allowed
flexibility in your
start and end hours. However, although they offer it, if you aren't
there until at
least 6 pm (regardless of what time you arrive), they aren't happy.
- Small office, most people had their own offices with doors. Only a few
cubes
where the programmers were, but most of them were empty.
- Activities. The company goes out to a movie (usually something related
to
computers or sci-fi) once a year as a group. They host Christmas and
Halloween
parties.
- Nepotism. If you can't stand working with a family, this isn't the
place for you.
- Opportunities for advancement. None that I saw.
- Corporate culture. If you're looking for diversity, a place where your
ideas are
welcome, where you're challenged to think, or a place to feel like
you're really a
part of a team, this is not the company for you.
- Working from home. Some employees are allowed to work from home,
including many who live in assorted places across the country.
- They are a Microsoft certified partner.
