IBM Global services is like a hydra, many heads, no direction. Many
glowing words from the top echelon but no clue as to what really
goes on. Intense pressure to sell into managed accounts but no
understanding that 20% of something is better than 30% of
NOTHING! could not violate bean-counter mentality but suffered if
quotas not met.
Most "leaders" were remote from staff which allowed a wide-open
style of management. Company surged somewhat when Gerstner
ran it but it was surface for the most part, favorite sons got favorite
plums while rest of folks foundered about.
Diversity was acknowledged and taught...because it was mandated
but practice was a different matter. Some of the diverse class were
given freat assignments because diversity ruled, not common
sense. Most of the diversity candididates I met were quite worthy of
their positions but the few in power, 'nuff said.
The hours were what you decided them to be, especially in the field.
Operating overseas was a hardship, Company felt that any
problem could be solved by throwing money at the Ex-pat.
Reporting relationships were fuzzy at best and social mores left
one in limbo.
