I was recruited by an employee of Home Depot and told that it was a
great place to work. I believed him and applied for an associate
position. I was hired in December of 2003 an shortly thereafter I spent
a week of orientation at night at the district office. The orientation
was very upbeat and I was happy that I was an employee. Then I was
assigned to my local store. Reality set in. The manager is ruthless,
tactless over bearing and intimidating. Management is by threat. Work
my way or be fired. I was willing to suffer through that because O
liked what I was doing. I was told my sales skills and quota were good
and I got along with my fellow employees and I loved dealing with
customer problems. Obviously the few assistant managers had not heard
about the management style of leading by example. They were poorly
prepared to lead a team of people at this location. The turnover of
employees is very high and the criticism of the management was never
ending by harrassed employees.
Let me explain that I was part time abd during my regular job I was the
Director of Human Resources and the Chief Financial Officer with over
35 years of management skills and training in world class organiztions.
So I do speak with some authority at the callous and poorly managed
employees at various home depot locations. I am a member of AARP and I
will file a wrongful discharge lawsuit as well as age and sex
discrimination. The maner of being told I was doing poor performance
had me reeling after being told my sales and tech skils were good but
my shelf stocking skills were bad. A monkey can stock shelves. This was
just a blatant excuse to let an older individual go without
repercussion. I would not recomend Home Depot to anyone.
