| department manager of hardware |
In the past year I have watched Home Depot go downhill in so many ways.
When I first began with the company several associates worked in each
department at any given time during the day. Now it is a very rare
occurance to find more than one associate per department. Typically
there are several departments being run by just one associate total.
Raises are pretty much a thing of the past-threats run much more rampant
than compliments. Typically an associate is thrown into a different
department with little or no training for that department. Our HRM
spends much more time trying to cover her own figures than defending
associates in any way. If you are full-time you must have a completely
OPEN availability-which means you cannot say you will not work at a
certain time or a specific day.
As a Department Manager I am surrounded by very overworked and under-
appreciated people. The "good ole boy" mentality may have dwindled in
the past several years but the feeling remains-if you are a man you will
advance at a much higher rate. This is even easier when you are a man
who likes the same football teams and drinks the same beer. Not just in
my store but most i've traveled to as well.
We usually average about 200 hours short for each week and with only 3
new people hired in the last 2 months. We all work very hard and get
more and more work put onto us with absolutely no way of getting it
accomplished. Unfortunately it doesn't look to improve any time soon.
I do not hate my job-only relate to so many other associates each day as
they dread what that day is going to bring. How much harder can anyone
possibly work?
