Job Title Salary Survey
Associate Editor Salary was pretty miserable, at least on the lower rungs where I worked. But that is pretty standard for publishing. Consider it more work experience, and do it only if you see it as the first step to moving up the ladder--the payoff is years down the road. I started--with a masters degree--at about $24k, eventually getting raises to $27.5--not a lot. No performance bonuses. Also, at the time they had a policy called 'project employees' that was a way of classifying people as temporary even though they worked full time, sometimes for years on end. This was how they avoided paying benefits. Since my days the federal government has put an end to the practice, but it still left a bad taste in a lot of employees' mouths. Harcourt General was well known to be a lean organization (read: cheap).
