Textbook publishing is still profitable, but there is not much room for
growth in the western economies--the market is saturated. Also, much
educational publishing can not be exported since it is tied to local
school demands. So expanding into other markets is difficult. One
strategy has been to use technology in 'value added' services such as
online materials, distance ed, etc. None of these initiatives have
really taken off.
On the other hand, the sector will never go away--there will always be a
need for educational materials. It is not a cyclical industry, so less
risk in boom and bust cycles, and demographics is on its side.
Population growth means more people in school, and more need for books,
etc.
