In one episode of the Sopranos an associate of Tony Soprano complains
about his habit of hoarding perks and benefits for himself, sharing
only fractions with his minions. He says "He eats alone." This sums
up work in technology at Guardian very nicely. Dennis Callahan truly
does eat alone. He cannot be trusted. He shares none of the wealth
gleaned from the hard work of his organization. He eats breakfast,
lunch and, frequently dinner with vendors and occasionally brings a
subordinate or two but, when it comes to magazine articles, perks, and
benefits of any kind, he truly does eat alone. Expect extreme demands
in terms of your commitment. Expect to see your manager publicly
humiliated by the CIO. It happens regularly and it is painful to
watch. One exec was so humiliated in a meeting of 15-20 people that he
could only hang his head. For the rest of the meeting he just stared
at the table and did not make a sound.
Get anywhere within 50 feet of the CIO's office and you are bombarded
with a display of magazines, gifts, and awards all about and for the
CIO. Advise for those who want to please him... bring food: just
enough for one.
