The company has a strong background in bromine chemistry and shares the
global brominated Flame Retardant market with two other major players.
In the other part of the polymer additive business, polymer stabilisers,
Great is second Globally behind Ciba Geigy. Oulook is good, since it
depends strongly on the future of plastics for all applications, but for
Flame Retardants mainly for Electrical&Electronic as well as Building&
Constructions materials. Employee morale is relatively low in the US
because of poor performance of company stock and recent repeated
reorganisations. Two FR competitors are Albemarle, with strengths and
weaknesses similar to ours, also with a bromine source in the same area
in the US. The other competitor is Dead Sea Bromine, with a cheaper
bromine source from the Dead Sea and a more agressive way of doing
business, often based on lower prices. Ciba Geigy enjoyed a very strong
position for quite a while, Great Lakes entered the market to gain
share, so we are the price cutters here. Ciba is considered to be an
arrogant supplier by many customers, much to our advantage.
