Working as an economist in the Philly office (actually it's outside of
Philly near the airport) is pretty relaxed most of the time but the
atmosphere depends somewhat on your manager. Generally, the feeling is
get your work done (work some overtime at deadlines) but if there's
nothing going on, you can probably sneak out early or come in late. The
Industry group gives you a lot of freedom and responsibility and my
impression of the Regional and International groups is similar. The
Macro group is the highest profile but has a bunch of big egos who
sometimes fight amongst themselves. The work is somewhat varied with a
combination of regular forecasts and special client projects. Good
writing skills are essential since you will be writing articles about
your forecasts for publication. Economists often have the opportunity to
pursue a specialization that they have an interest in. It's a fairly
small company so you know everyone from the IT guys to the CEO and there
is a lot of opportunity for junior staff to interact with the department
heads. The Philly office in particular is very friendly and open with
lunch-time potlucks declared on a regular basis. The 20s-30s crowd gets
together outside of work for social activities fairly often.
