Job Title Workplace Survey
Major Appliance Service Technician I have worked for General Electric, as a Major Appliance Service Tech. for 24yrs. In that length of time I have had 27 "direct" managers. I'd say that about covers advancements.. but I shouldn't forget to mention, "If you pass up a promotion or don't want to move to raise your 3 kids, in 5 different states, in 6 or 7 yrs... well... on the other hand, just think of all the nice restraunts you can tell your family you eaten at when christmas comes next year. If you say "No", "It would be the last one get." I was nevered offered the oppurtunity, because I have good morals, good values, am honest, and tell the truth. That would about eliminate me completely. I'm raising 3 children that have, maintain, and respect those kinda things as well. I felt the need to say, that GE has had some very smart, professional men that are to be respected, I respect, admire and became a better person for having known them. The CEO Jeff IMwald is such a man, witnessed by a woman, who's Cooktop I repaired, that fed him lunch with her son, for 2 yrs while attending school. As it is with most CEO's It's most unfortunate, he hasn't time to stay in touch with the aspects of this business. Had it not been for planning stratagies, (diversty invests.) from its executives, and based just on the appliance industry, the name GE would be as common today, as Admirel, or Cold Spot, White WestingHouse or Serville. Nobody, I've heard of yet, has the ----- to tell the man. Though the Appliance Division is very small contributor to the overall dollars and cents picture, it still maintains 60% for the overall image of the company. That number above... 27 managers, Yes & that doesn't include how many of their boss' ..."If you would like to call that", "Job Security" ...I hope you can ride a surf board. Today, we are known as M.A.B.G. (Major Appliance Business Group) Twenty years ago, It was "THE" best in the country, bar none. Today, it has fallen victum to the term, which we refer to as: "The Standard Corporate Stucture." GE. is the fore-father that concieved this style of business. The model, for which many companies have adopted their business operating stlye due to GE's recent success.. (which has allowed stk splits, I believe 4 times, in 25yrs, the last 3-1 per share). Had it not been for being as diverse as a mutaul fund. (which there is no other company like this one) There is no way, if managed as is current M.A.G.B. practice, the Appliance operations end of the company, would either have been sold off (similar to Sm.appl. sold to Thompson almost 20 yrs ago). or closed completely. The companies who model after GE's stlye of management will someday, either redirect their stlye, or suffer the consequences brought about by misunderstanding human nature. It has long been stated, and is the opinion of management, "That a person, doesn't necessarilly need to know anything about the business, to manage people". Ever hear that before..? I would bet, it was a manager who said it..?! My favorite response was, "Just because I don't have a piece of paper that says I went to "Stupid School" doesn't mean I can't know what I'm talking about." Which is often mis-construde as being politically incorrect.. it is.. As I re-read the message listed below, I stopped to hear the tone of the message, I hope the meaning isn't taken the wrong way by the reader. I've found typing on the computer, makes it difficult for the person reading to get the proper feeling of what you trying to express does not leave much in the way of emotions or feelings, 24 yrs trying to get someone to pay attention, becomes frustrating. If there is anything my experience can give to someone else so they may benefit from, in a positive manner, is my only motive writing. That would be the satisfaction . I recieved this survey by spam & was a spur-or-the-moment thing. at years end I give notice, and look for other options. Their business will continue its downward momentum, It will not change, and here is why.. regardless of what they say, people that buy their product, mean nothing more than a dollar sign. They are a number, based on the bottom line. Its wrong for anyone or company to not respect the very people who buy and support you, through the purchase of your product. People will not stand for it out because of their own self-respect . its become a business, where paperwork, procedes cust's intrests' In simple terms, it's okay to falsefy work invoices so that management can show a profit, rather than properly service, then repair consumers appliances. On the surface, it will be stated different. In the trenches, the Techs know, those who are in the low 25% as numbers go, win a prize. They get harrassed, and told "Failure to maintain satisfactory performance, could lead to disciplinary action, up to and including discharge from GE." Expectations....? That maybe fine, you say, or should be expected.. maybe in some cases. However, since GE's management stlye has been to eliminate jobs, within the company to increase the bottom-line. Major arturies dangle-about, 20yrs of "Support-cut-backs to "MABG" as it's now called (Major Appliance Business Group) Their Service Techs must include the jobs, that was supported by 2 or 3 people, their job's.... gone. Their tech's, 95% of them must or willfully, fill out a service document or invoice, on a product that never had anything wrong with it. Thus recieving "Credit Revenue", increasing their performance % totals for the "bottom line." The fallout costs more in the long run, but in management, if you don't make your numbers, you get fired anyway... but I doubt anyone who may read this, is not aware of that...! well, maybe a couple of engineers who have spent a few hours, days, wks.. etc. Looking for problems, redesigning, retro...etc. at costs of ?? might think differently. perhaps, if the lady who worked at the local grocery store, the farmer, or grandmother, could have afford to buy a "New" one the gentleman, who used to work at the Factory, where they were made in Louisville, Ky... in the good old, USA..... might be there as well. I can no longer tollerate being responsible to provide excuses to Ge's custs. Though their sales continue to increase, the reasoning is simple, the population in the last 75yrs has more than doubled, people are living 20- 3 longer, and they just haven't screwed enough of them.my goals in life I have kept simple, as most people. I cannot be a part in preserving that kind of work place for my children or grandchildren. I charish my family, I work for my family, I enjoy being with them doing nothing at all.. I like watching them play soccer, ice skating, and helping them try to understand how to playout their role in what life may have in store for them. No matter who or where you come from.. These are just laws that all parents have or should have for their children even the parents who appear not toomy goals in life I have kept simple, as most people. I cannot be a part in preserving that kind of work place for my children or grandchildren. In closing, my appologies for some of the format here, its close about 230am. I am in need of sleep... So as I take my experiences from life's deck of Playing cards, I toss a couple back, looking foward to see what hand I draw next.. Peace!
