Gartner has much pride in their interview process. Its called "group",
that is if you make it past the 2-3 phone screening interviews and are
invited to the day-long group in the hallowed halls of the HQ in
Stamford, CT.
There you'll spend the day this way: first you'll prob have 3-5 one-on-
one interviews with other analysts in your group. Next you'll be put in
a cube with a PC and they'll bring up Word. There, for one hour, you'll
write a research note. Some groups assign topics; others let you pick
your own. You've got one hour, so be sure to think through an outline
in your mind and be prepared to write - complete with research
detail/statistics/etc to support the position in your report. Be sure
its no more than about 4500 characters! Yes, characters. Brievity is is
key; hard hitting and impactful are key too.
Once you finish this task, you'll be put in a room with 4-8 analysts
who will read your research and then will proceed to shred you to
pieces! I'm not kidding. Most analysts doing group take pride in trying
to one-up each other in trying to make the candidate fall of their
feet. If you've not come up with something "new" (meaning something
Gartner analysts dub as "new" and insightful and impactful - and trust
me, most of them think they are the only "thinkers" in the world -
you'll come away from this experience with cuts and bruises.
Almost every analyst, once hired, has a story to tell about
their "group".
My advice: have fun with it. Though it can be the Spanish Inquisition,
don't be afraid to say "That's not my area of exprtise, however Joe
Blow in ABC research area is and I'd be happy to direct your question
to him so you can get the best advice possible." Its OK if you don't
know everything, but trying to fake that you do and answering questions
that come up in the group interview can be deadly. HEED THIS ADVICE.
If you pass the test, the process can take from 1-6 weeks. HR at this
company is pathetic. You'll sign your life away in tons of documents
(NDA's, confidentiality, etc). But once you get "in" the job is fun,
but HIGHLY HIGHLY competitive.
