Gartner is a great, but really difficult place to work. Working for GG
opens tons of doors in the technology sector, but to work as an analyst
is very difficult. The corporate culture is very interesting - there
are a lot of very bright, (and maybe a little unusual) people there, and
people tend to work very hard. Some let the press spotlight and talking
to CEO's go to their heads, but the good VP's are usually diligent about
deflating egos. The workforce was not very diverse, mostly parallel to
the fact that the tech sector attracts somewhat more men than women.
Most analysts can telecommute, so dress code is a non-issue, and it was
usually pretty amusing (in a bad way) when the techies had to dress for
conferences. Expect to work really hard - there is the year round
Symposium(annual major conference) development machine to feed, plus
writing research, plus vendor and customer calls, plus supporting the
consulting group - not something most humans can do in less than 60+
hour weeks. The opportunities for advancement are pretty limited -
there are seniority promotions as an analyst, but Gartner has recognized
that most analysts don't have great management skills. However, being
an analyst is a great job, and many have created very nice lives for
themselves.
