In General - GES employees are poorly treated and quickly discarded
when they don't fit the master plan. Many hourly employees are taken
advantage of and truly not appreciated for their hard work. Corporate
Communications are poor and red tape is huge. The simplest of questions
can take months to get answered and may never get answered at all.
While integrity is suppose to be a core value, there are many (many)
examples where this is just not the case. In general people look out
for themselves and invest considerably in their CYA files. While Paul
Dykstra is very pleasant and speaks great words, his direction is not
followed by even some of his closest executive managers. Worse there is
a disconnect that grows in intensity as information is disseminated
down the chain of command.
Corporate Culture - The Corporate Culture is different depending on
what location you are working at. In general the atmosphere and
attitude at the HQ in Las Vegas seems very good. Many people aspire to
work there and try to get transferred to one of the Las Vegas
buildings.
Chicago on the other hand is a location to be avoided at all costs.
While there are some fantastic people working at that location, there
are problems that will not be fixed anytime soon. Ironically most of
these problems are caused by; HQ directives that are poorly thought out
for the Chicago market, National level employees residing in the
Chicago office, and the Chicago General Manager position which revolves
faster than a spinning top. By the way if you??re interviewing for the
VP/GM slot in Chicago you might as well wear orange with a bright red
target painted on your back. Las Vegas has sniper rifle with a 2000
mile range and it seems to get some use.
The Chicago workplace is worn with little concern for how it looks to
its customers, the public, or its employees. However, there are
examples of great looking offices and buildings within GES there are
just not in Chicago.
Security ranges from poor to non existent however surprisingly
incidents and problems are rare in the office but more prevalent in the
warehouse.
Politics - No matter what location you choose a masters degree in
Corporate Politics (also known as game playing) will be well utilized.
Diversity - GES gets almost an A+ in Diversity and Chicago shines in
this area. People of all different backgrounds are welcome there and
work well together. Chicago is by far more diverse than even the HQ
location. There are many different types of people working well
together. GES is a very Diverse and multicultural company.
Hours - Chicago primarily runs a standard day time business schedule
with extended hours as needed for shows. Salaried employees seem to be
expected to work overtime without compensation.
Dress Code - Mostly Business Casual except for positions that work in
and around the warehouse and shops.
