Fortis is a diverse environment. Each department, though under the same
lead is managed slightly differently. In the case of disability, a lot
of freedom is given to the employees. Managers trust the experience and
capabilities of the employees they have hired, and will back their
decisions so long as it is clear the analyst did their research. Hours
are flexible and the company runs on a 37.5 hr week with semi-monthly
pay. Dress is business casual, leaning toward casual, and the management
inspires personal confidence and support of your abilities. There is a
definite distinction between the short and long term analysts; short
term analysts are in a family type team atmosphere and long term
analysts are separate unto themselves with supervisory input. Rewards
are offered for goal-reaching (ie/ lunches brought in or gift cards to a
variety of locations). The environment is also laid back in that you set
your own schedules and manage your caseload according to your own daily
plan. As a result, return to work goals are high, but considerate to the
insured, and turn around time is extremely low creating a positive
customer service experience reflected in surveys to the claimants. In
return, the clients pleasure in their personal experience with Fortis is
felt by the employees... which only makes us want to please them more. I
love disability. I appreciate the amount of lead management allows us
and the lack of constant supervision. I am a firm believer that as a
responsible adult hired to do a responsible job, employers should trust
their hiring instinct and not constantly check you over your shoulder.
Fortis, though it has its audits and safety nets, doesn't hold your hand
every step of the way, but allows you to be that responsible adult they
hired.
