Foley tries to pretend that it is a small Milwaukee firm, when in fact
it is no different from all the other "mega" firms out there. In other
words, the only thing that matters is hours billed, period. Even after
upper management stated in writing that they would support business
attorneys who were facing a downturn in business, they proceeded to lay
off business attorneys nationwide with no public announcment. This
makes the dismissed attorneys appear to be damaged goods, since the firm
does not want to own up to the fact that hours have been affected by the
economy. At least other firms like Cooley and Mofo announced that there
would be layoffs, thus making it easier for dismissed attorneys to find
new assignments with other firms. The severance package is essentially
non-existent. They actually expected people to continue billing during
their final notice period.
Diversity is a joke. They make a big deal about the paltry amount
($40,000) that they put into a minority scholarship fund, but they have
never interviewed a minority law student who was good enough to qualify
for the scholarship. The scholarship standards happen to be the same as
the hiring standards.
Like other large firms, you will find minorities working in litigation,
but none or few in the business sections. In the history of this firm,
only 2 African-American attorneys have made partner through the ranks.
The other minority partners, which are very few, were already partners
in firms that Foley acquired. This is not a minority friendly firm.
