Dversity: the bank has a wide range of folks working for it and seems,
from my perspective, to encourage diversity. People seemed to be hired
because of how well they fit the needs of the job, and we wind up with
a mix of different ages, races, backgrounds, etc. The atmosphere among
employees is extremely cordial.
hours: depending on what department one works in, hours are flexible
enough to make life easier to get through. I usually put in more than
40 hours, but I have some flexibility in when I come in and when I go
home. I think a lot of people put in a little more than 40 hours.
People are pretty dedicated and there is a lot of work to be done.
dress code: technically, the management of the department sets the
dress code. Some folks work manual jobs so they wear appropriate
clothes. Some folks meet with people outside the bank and dress more
formally. The rest of us fall somewhere in between depending on the
day, our activities (maybe there's a meeting one day with higher ups),
and our mood. I usually try to dress nicely, business suits, but some
days, including most Fridays, I wear jeans.
opportunities for advancement: seem excellent to me. If one is capable,
and a position opens up somewhere, one is considered if one expresses
interest. No one is pidgeon holed. Many research assistants have moved
to other areas of the bank after they get tired of their demanding
jobs, and many managers and officers have been promoted from the ranks.
corporate culture: well, bank management seems genuinely considered
about the well being of employees. There is a sense of loyalty and
dedication to the institution among the bank management, which, I
think, employees sense and find motivating. In my department there are
a lot of smart people with good senses of humor, so while everyone is
serious about their responsibilities and they do not take them lightly,
the environment is still very pleasant and not confining or dull. Other
departments seem to have lots of happy and cheerful employees, so I
imagine it is the same for them. Management also expresses concern
regularly about efficiency, so there is a bit of a sober attitude, too.
Sometimes I wish we would spend more on some things like some of the
projects I work on. For example, our publications are pretty dull, low-
cost affairs. Some of the other banks have much more contemporary-
looking, handsomer publications.
Another nice thing about the bank is it is supportive of employees
continuing their education. The bank offers a bunch of courses
periodically, luncheon speakers, and things like that. Of course, they
also have a tuition reimbursement.
