As a courier, I'm part of the uniformed fleet of pickup and delivery
drivers that interact with the public on FedEx's behalf. There are
specific uniform and dress codes that are widely ignored. There is
a "strict" policy to never throw packages, yet I don't know one courier
or manager that does not, some to the point of knowingly damaging
packages. On a brighter note, I've never worked for a company with more
enthusiasm from the workforce, including management. On any day, you
can see managers pitching in on the conveyer belts, including our female
station manager. Having been in aerospace manufacturing most of my
carreer, I'll say every manager I've ever seen takes pains to
differentiate hiim or herself from the "individual contributors" who
actually do work and are paid significantly less for it. FedEx has
excellent benefits, even for a part-timer like me. Diversity is
practiced very widely, but talked about little, just the opposite of my
previous experiences. Age discrimination? They hired me at age 54.
Hours are set by policy, clocked and tracked closely for all employees.
FedEx has a policy of hiring from within and all openings must be
available to employees for 45 days before going outside. Training for
advanced positions is widely available withing the company and FedEx has
a reembursement policy for outside education.
