In order to receive the job I currently have I went through 2 separate
interviews. Both interviews were conducted with the specific agent that
I would be assisting in the company. Both interviews, it should be
noted, are held at the office of the firm in California. The interviews
are strictly face-to-face in order to gain a more personal
understanding of both the potential employer and employee. The first
interview is not held in the personal office of the agent, it??s held in
one of the firm??s conference rooms in order to give the individual a
feel for the offices atmosphere. The first interview was a introductory
meeting, that was designed to select the top few individuals out of
several candidates to discuss what my employer wanted, what my needs
were in terms of student trying to work a fulltime job and classes, and
what our goals would be together should I be hired. One of the key
aspects of the first interview was a test that was administered to all
candidates. Since the job is both and administrative and clerical in
nature, a test was given that required the proof reading and correction
of a standard business style letter, a spelling test of common legal
and insurance terminology, and semi-vocabulary portion that tested the
individuals knowledge of what several key legal terms meant. After the
test, a word of mouth interview is given.
The four most distinct questions I can remember from the interview are
the following:
1. What talents do you believe you have that would make you an
effective Business Administrator?
2. If we are willing to work with your schedule, how many hours do
you believe you can contribute per week?
3. Are you comfortable with dealing with several people per day by
the phone or in person?
4. This is a busy agency, and I will not always be in the office.
Do you believe yourself capable to handle all your duties during the
day, without my assistance should I be visiting a client during the day?
The second interview was more focused on technical matters as to what
my responsibilities would be as an employee, what my schedule would
need to be in order to meet their needs, and what I believed I could
contribute to the company and the work place in general. The second
interview also discusses the issue of salary and the opportunities for
pay increase in the company, and what starting salaries are common
throughout the company according to the position.
The interview atmosphere is very light and casual, it??s much more
conversational than strict and impersonal. The agents are much more
interested in finding out about you as a person in order to deliberate
if you??re correct for the position. The test can be a bit intimidating,
not because of the nature of the test, (which most college students
should be more than qualified to take) but because a test seems out of
the standard for most white collar interviews.
All and all the interview process was fairly painless and moved fairly
quickly. There is a week long separation between the two interviews,
but shortly after the second interview within a matter of hours they
alert you as to whether or not you??ve been offered the position.
