Although I have worked many jobs of the clerical and administrative
type, this job was unique in several aspects. The office atmosphere is
pleasant and friendly. All employees, including the agents and staff
are friendly and cordial with each other while being extremely
dedicated to their work. The office environment is relaxed, although
there is an unspoken law that work absolutely comes first. However,
everyone is willing to help each other in completing the days "to do
list". The training associated with becoming prepared for the job is
extremely thorough. Every individual in the firm is more than willing
to contribute to explanatory or demonstrational examples for the
individual-in-training. The office diversity in terms of religion is
sparse; the majority of all agents are of the Anglo-Saxon Christian
faith. In terms of race, the office is one of the most diverse places I
have seen, specifically in Orange County CA. There is at a minimum a
40% diversity rate when compared to Caucasian staff. The hours are
fairly standard, generally from 8am till 5pm. While these seem to be
the standard hours, those working in clerical and administrative
positions are allowed flexibility with their managers to make their
schedules work with conflicting activities during the day, ie. Classes,
another job, etc?? I have also observed that several agents and upper
staff will vary their hours by coming in either earlier or later during
the day in order to adjust to their daily lives. In addition, holidays
are generous at this company granting a total of 10-15 days off per
year for the office, and several half days spread out through the
calendar year for various reasons. The dress code is professional. The
male workers of the company generally dress in suits, but leave the
suit coats on their chairs. Women's dress is a bit more flexible. The
dress for women is strictly conservative but can range from suits and
suited separates to more casual business attire such as skirts and
blouses. The opportunities presented by the company are tremendous. The
company is an investment and insurance company, and the benefits are
amazing. They offer a wide variety of annuities and product services in
those to areas to all employees, which is beneficial because it grants
every employee the opportunity to build an investment portfolio for the
future. I find this specifically to be conducive to the work place
environment because it reminds each individual employee that the
company that they are working for is dedicated to making the job
pliable for further career advancement. Those entering into clerical
and administrative positions are by no means locked into that position
without possibility of advancement. Several college students who enter
into the positions of secretaries, operators, and business
administrators have moved up by company sponsored certification
programs that have led to them being on the path to being hired as an
agent within the company. It is too be noted that this is just what I
have seen in my specific firm, and it is to follow suit that other
firms may or may not do the same thing.
