I am an undergraduate student majoring in Finance. I have a 3.8 GPA,
excellent leadership - held 6 officer positions in my finance club, and
great work experience - Bulge Bracket i-bank. I interviewd with
ExxonMobil for a Summer 2003 internship in their Controller's division.
To be selected for the interview, Exxon looked for three things, in
order: a 3.5+ GPA, stong leadership, and work experience.
My first round interview was very laid back. I did not receive any
technical questions. I was first asked "what did you learn during your
last internship?". I brought up teamwork and leadership in my answer
since I knew from previous experience Exxon loves leadership traits. I
was then asked about my work with my finance club. Again, I stressed
superior leadership skills and got a positive response from my
interviewer. Since I was a finance major, I was asked how many
accounting classes I had taken. I told my interviewer I had taken 5
classes - they were looking for at least 4 accounting classes. The
interview concluded with the interviewer asking me "do you have any
personal concerns about working for an oil company?". I told her that
I
did not and stressed how I felt large oil companies benefitted the
world
and were more environmentally conscious than most people perceived them
to be. Again, I recieved positive feedback.
Even though my interview was near perfect, I did not get an offer for a
2nd round interview. They only selected one candidate from my school
for the 8 spots they had nationwide. The candidate who was selected
had
slightly better leadership experience than me. I called me interviewer
and she told me they looked for leadership first amongst the
interviewed
candidates, grades were secondary.
Exxon also looks for two other qualities. They want people to fit
their
conservative culture and they want people to work with the company for
a
VERY long time. I stressed my teamwork skills to show that I could fit
their culture. I also told Exxon that I wanted to work for the same
company until I retire. My interviewer smiled and told me that was in
line with Exxon's views on its employees.
