We are a utility trying to make ourselves into a business. Let me
restate this to say we are a very technical outfit with very little
documentation about why we do some things. As an example of how we deal
with diversity issues, we recently broke our department into small
groups to discuss a number of Human Resource type issues. The group
discussing Work-Life Balance was purposely chosen to only include
Supervisors. I was chosen to discuss diversity. That particular group
only included white males over 50 years old. Dress code is relaxed but
requirements for safety related items is strict to the point of excess.
It reminds me of making everyone do something because one person did
something else. Corporate culture is very change oriented but very bad
at change management. We lose as much as we gain for each re-org.
Hours are bad and getting worse. Some first line management is expected
to spend much longer than an 8 hr day with no chance for overtime. Most
of the folks working for and alongside these guys are making more money
than they do. You used to be able to look up for higher jobs, but the
latest trend has been to pull folks in from outside so that you
basically need to leave the company to do better. "Early Out" is
something folks hope for rather than consider 65 as the regular
retirement.
