The overall outlook in poor. Looking at a s.w.o.t. analysis (strengths,
weaknesses, opportunity and threats) the particular strenghts is that
the market has had several hospitals in the immediate area close.
Therefore, the present market is viable and there is a need to develop a
market entry strategy that speaks to those patients who are now without
a local healthcare facility, find out thier service needs, develop
flights (promotional letters, coupons, advertisments) to increase market
entry and thus, market share. This is not being established because of
financial hardships that are comming to bear on the hospital and an
inablity to focus on a strategic design that is clear, realistic and
reachable. Most products and sevices have not been well thought out and
in alignment with the needs of the community they serve. One good
aspect is that they do have a child mental health center that appears
profitable, but many needs of a community that is underserved and
suffering from hypertension, addiction, low birth weight, heart disease,
stoke, cancer, HIV, depression, diabetes mellitus, and mental health
disorders and is coupled with morbidity factors, is in need of a
comprehensive vision. This vision should be focused in the direction of
the provision of a comprehensive care plan to such a community.
Finally, empolyee morale is poor because management has failed to
manage change in a fashion that is inclusive with the employees. Many
employee feel disenfranchised and fearful for their jobs because they
are aware of the overriding problems that presently effect the financial
health of that hospital and no one has a clue what is going to happen
next. Employees spend a majority of thier time in meetings trying to
sort things out with no changes realized or strategic intiatives
completed. This is unfortunate because there is an opportunity lost in
this situation and the one's who will truly pay will be the
community.
