Supervisor Working for Dupont has been a definite learning experience. When I got out of the service in 1990 Dupont offered the best opportunities and pay, based on my life experiences. I started in the manufacturing area making automotive paint and quickly advanced to a supervisory role. Dupont is a company that believes in promoting from within. I hired in to the plant in Flint, Michigan however that plant was closed in 1995 and I was transferred to Mt. Clemens, Michigan. The first year at Mt. Clemens was stressful because there were 3 different cultures (Flint, Toledo, and Mt. Clemens) that had to be combined and learn to work together. This didn't happen quickly but we have gotten there. The plant is very diverse and we also have different networking organizations that exist. There is an African American Network, a Latino American Network, a Womens Network, and an Alternative Lifestyle (gay) Network. These networks sponsor many activities that are not limited to just network members. We have 7 different work schedules in the plant because we are a 24 hour 7 day a week operation. I work a 12 hour night shift schedule that allows me to have 15 days off a month. The only thing I don't like about the schedule is that I have to work 2 weekends a month. With my husband being a Monday through Friday truck driver we only get 2 weekends a mnth together. There isn't really a dress code at our plant because the employees that actually make and test the paint wear uniforms. As a supervisor in the lab I can wear pretty much anything I want and I usually wear a lb coat over my clothing. As a first line supervisor there is not a lot of opportunity for advancement. In order to advance you usually have to get out of line management unless you have a degree. Although Dupont does promote people who are not degreed.
