At the time, DBM was being sold by Harcourt Brace to a Canadian
conglomerate. DBM was always about the % of profit that went back into
the company. DBM was always considered the "cash cow" of Harcourt Brace
and retun on profit was paramount.
All the offices are run differently. The manager of the Sacramento
office has a MBA, but no past experience in career development. Being a
nationally certified career counselor, I was always told I was not to do
any counseling of any kind, you deliver the program, and walk away.
The manager is a sensor/thinker, changed direction at a moments notice,
and expected consultants to be available at any time to go any place.
Often assignments were cancelled on the day of workshops because of a
change in the client's plans. There were no set hours, nothing certain,
and told if you weren't available then you were no longer "on the list."
Opportunities for advancement didn't exist, shared consultants among
offices didn't exist, and no consideration was given to real career
development issues
