Many people don't really understand what it is like to work for
Dillard's. The only thing that matters as a sales associate is your
sales numbers. Here's how it works: when you are hired you are given a
standard sales per hour (how much $$ you should sell per hour...SPH) and
a raise goal. if your sales go high enough, you get a raise. if you
stay within your standard SPH, your pay stays the same. However, if you
go below this, you get a 10% pay cut. Reviews are every 6 months. The
company does not make it easy for their associates to make their goals,
however. Far too many employees are scheduled, and this can create a
very competitive, hostile environment.
There is more. The store is divided up into workcenters. all the
employees' SPH in a particular workcenter (for example, women's clothing
or children's clothing) is used to calculate a workcenter average SPH.
If an employee's SPH falls too far below this average (EVEN THOUGH
he/she may be making her sales numbers), he/she has 30 days to pick up
their sales or they are fired. This has happened to countless friends
of mine. It's the management's way of getting rid of people they don't
like, even if the sales look decent. This really creates a sense
of "who's next?" and makes everyone uneasy.
There is a real sense of associate vs. management in this company, and
it is my belief that the managers would like to keep it this way. Upper
management rarely, if ever talks to staff, and many have caught our
store manager literally spying on us - hiding behind racks of clothes,
etc. He does this when we're not having a busy day, because he feels it
is our fault that merchandise isn't selling.
The store does a fair amount of advancement within. However, it depends
on who you know - becoming friends with the operations manager is the
only way to get an ASM position. I am finishing up my last year in
college and the managers say i should get an assistant ASM position when
i graduate but nothing is set in stone.
As far as hours goes, I have never had a real problem with working
around my school schedule. Getting overtime is a rarity.
The dress code is as follows: men must wear dress pants and a button
down shirt with a tie; jacket is optional unless working in the suit
department. Women must wear a blazer or cardigan and dress slacks or
skirt (hosiery is required). no open toed shoes, khakis, or denim.
