The Irish Civil Service, through the Civil Service Commission, runs
exams and interviews for various positions within the Civil Service.
The Civil Service Commission is an independent service and cannot be
canvassed.
Promotional opportunities are advertised, and those who qualify, usually
2 years employment in a qualifying grade make their application. The
application form is short, name, address contact phone number, date of
birth and social security number. It is up to each person to know
whether or not they qualify in terms of employment and sick leave, and
this is not verified until a position becomes available, by which time
they will be interviewed, only to be turned down at the last minute.
Candidates are called for a written exam, in English and Mathematics and
may choose to claim credit for having Irish. Following the exam,
candidates are placed in order of merit. They are then issued a more
detailed application form including the compentency section. This lists
5/6 compentencies relevant to the position. The candidate must give an
example though their experiences of how they demonstrated each
compentency. At interview they will then be asked to elaborate on each
compentency giving perhaps another example. That is all they are
interviewed on. After the interview they are again placed in order of
merit and given a position as it arises.
