Working for the Irish Dept. Agriculture is working in a relaxed
environment, where the work gets done, but without undue stress...there
are days of course, when things need to be done "yesterday". A flexible
working regime is operated, whereby staff, if due to be in, must be as
their desks between 10am and 12.30pm and 2.30pm and 4pm. However, staff
may commence work from 8am and finish at 7pm. They are required to work
139hrs per four week period, working up to 11.5 hours above this, to
allow them 1.5 days off in the next four week period. I also have 23
days annual leave, with bank and public holidays extra. I am a
permanent and pensionable employee. There is no dress code, except you
would be expected to dress neatly and if you were attending an important
meeting, dress in a suit or similar.
The Irish Dept. Agriculture has approx. 4000 in staff, all over the
country. We have an extensive networked system of computers, email and
the internet available to all. Given the nature of the work, there is a
huge variety of work available to staff and requests can be made to work
at different jobs or different locations. There is also the opportunity
to work within the EU on secondment or other duties around the European
Union. A colleague recently became an attache to Rome.
There are reasonably good opportunities for advancement, particularly if
you are willing to move to new locations around the country.
The Irish Civil Service runs a Performance Management Development
System, whereby each member of staff has a role profile, regular role
reviews with line management and training needs identified. Training is
provided then, through the training unit of each department.
