In the boom of the economy, you had your choice of types of engagements,
fields of interest and more, but you also worked 60+ hours a week and
travelled anywhere and everywhere. Dress was business casual (most were
very trendy, expensive business casual) unless your client was business
formal (read - suits). Dressy khakis were about as relaxed as you would
ever get - no open toed shoes, no mules and now sandals.
Corporate culture was great - unless they were looking at you for
downsizing. You worked hard, had access to work in the pre- and post-
sales areas. For the most part, partners were open minded and
progressive in believing people's ability was borne out in their work
ethic and talents. However, I had the unfortunate situation of having a
counselor believe that women did not belong in the work place or deserve
promotions and recognition in the workplace. This is what hurt the most.
Once I was "free" of this person, I remained "tainted" since I
questioned the power structure. This consulting culture was wonderful if
you knew how to help sell, work long hours, not question the power
structure, and learn how to work hard and keep your head down. Becoming
an individual was not the best thing to be in that organization.
I learned quite a bit, I was able to work in a number of industries,
roles and engagements. I would not change my choice to go into
Consulting - just change my belief that everyone can make partner. Only
the golden few are permitted to move forward. And, yes, it is an up or
out situation.
