Davis & Harman LLP is a boutique, specific-niche tax law firm with a
particular focus on government relations(particularly Congress and the
IRS). The culture of this firm has been very traditional and rather
conservative, though through expansion and the hiring of several new
attorneys, this has begun to slowly evolve.
This is not the most racially-diverse law firm in Washington. All the
partner-attorneys are caucasian. All associate attorneys are caucasian
except for one asian. The male-female ratio is fair, especially in the
associate attorney ranks.
The hours are unusually reasonable for a Washington, DC law firm.
Associates usually start around 8:30 or 9:00 and leave between 6:30 and
7:30. Sometimes associate attorneys do work from home on evenings or
weekends, but generally most work is done in the office.
Administrative assistants work 7.5 hours a day, Monday - Friday.
Usually 8:30-5:00 with an hour lunch or 9:00-5:30 with an hour lunch.
The office, in my opinion, is very flexible about allowing an
administrative assistant to take vacation or sick leave. Because of
the small size and the structure of the firm, there are no
opportunities for advancement of administrative assistants. The dress
code is officially business casual. Generally no one wears jeans, even
on Fridays, which are supposed to be a bit more casual. Dress is
conservative.
