| WTCY-AM Program Director & midday personality on WWKL-FM Hot 92 |
Corporate culture: On the programming side, it is an informal, somewhat
relaxed environment with flexibilty in how employees go about planning
and executing their work day. On the sales side, it is a more formal,
less relaxed environment based on hierarchy and revenue generation.
Diversity: On the programming side, out of 13 full time jocks, there
are 6 women, 7 men, 12, Caucasians, 1 African-American, 0 Lations, 0
Asains, 0 Native Americans. Out of the 4 Program Directors, there are 3
males, 1 female, 1 African-American, 0 Latinos, 0 Asains, 0 Native
Americans. Note: the 1 African-American is the Program Director on one
station and full time jock on another station. The average age range
for full-time jocks / PD's is in the mid to upper 30's. I am the
youngest full-time Programming staff member at 28.
Hours: Given the business of radio is 24/7, the hours are not much
different. The longest hours are in the winter months when I (as the
only local on-air personality for the AM station) is expectated to
deliver weather cancellations, delays, and closings by 6am, requrinig
my arrival to the radio station between 5:15 am and 5:45am. Fourteen to
sixteen hour days are common for me from November to February. During
slower times of the year, the average work day for me is between 10-12
hours.
Dress code: For the programming staff in the 4 station cluster, the
dress code is extremly informal (jeans, khakis, etc). For the sales
staff, the expectated dress code is business formal (suits and ties for
men and suits and dresses for women).
Opportunities for advancement: Opportunities exist to increase skill
sets, however, compensation is not offered for job multiple duties the
employee willing takes on. For example, I was hired as the Program
Director for WTCY-AM 1400 The Touch and two months later took on the
job duty of mid-day personality on a sister station WWKL-FM Hot 92. The
opporunity to polish my on-air skill set and work in two different
music formats is wonderful for personal growth. It is unfortunate, that
the company only sees my "double duties" as "job security" instead of
deserving compensation for the additional work I do.
