The positive: Cox has a very conservative corporate culture in both
their approach to business, as well as their internal employee policies.
They maintain a trim employee base, hence there has never been massive
layoffs (massive defined as 100+ at any one time). Accounting procedures
are tightly measured, even before Enron, and all managers are expected
to fully understand and be commited to their budget, expenses and
revenue goals. It is extremely family oriented with flexible hours,
excellent cafeteria and gym benefits. Lastly, they are still offering a
retirement package (rarely seen any longer). Dress code: formal casual
and formal in board meeting dates.
The negative: because they are so tight in their employee hirings,
employees are expected to fulfill the job of two or more people. Of
course, it totally depends on your manager, but it is a very hard
working environment.
They don't offer 401K the moment you begin working, it could take from
one year to one and a half to initiate the plan depending on your start
date. The medical, dentist and vision benefits are not up to par with
equal-type companies.
Opportunities for advancement: It is tough to be promoted within your
own division, since there is little people movement. However, the
company's umbrella is so large with many different types of divisions
(residential, commercial, radio, TV, newspapers, car auctions, etc),
that it is easy fairly easy to move laterally or up across divisions.
