I had the privilege of working as a stipend volunteer for AmeriCorps
VISTA for a year. Not many people like the thought of living under a
monthly stipend of $635 a month. Working as a VISTA focused mainly
around recruiting volunteers, fundraising and researching for community
resources among other tasks associated with building a program to
revitalize an underpriviliged sector. In my case, I worked for 3 child
care facilities where I had to think with 2 other colleagues how to
enhance the services of these centers who offered a quality child care
package sometimes limited by personnel and budget. The advantage behind
this job was that it was fairly new and there was plenty of room for
growth to start from. The dress code was business casual and you had to
be presentable. There was no set schedule but the hours fell mainly
around 8am-5pm Monday through Friday. The diversity was quite
noticeable since living in an underprivilged community dealt with
working primarily minorities and those living near the poverty line.
Yet the atmosphere was friendly as the staff was mostly supportive and
mature enough to appreciate a VISTA volunteer - which was mainly a post-
college youth dedicating one year out of his/her time to step out of
the middle class/ suburban world and experience a taste of poverty
while doing valuable community service.
