Working at Continental has an upside - business casual dress, flexible
work
schedules, and overtime paid to salaried employees when working on
approved
projects. Unfortunately, this is more than balanced out by a corporate
culture
that embraces infinite levels of useless middle management, promotes the
Peter
Principle, and relies on consultants to help with any decision - actual
employees
need not offer their opinion. As an example, we were using a consultant
for
years in the EDI area who was excellent, really sharp. One of my dotted-
line
managers worked with her daily, always taking her advice over employees,
calling
her for everything. The company finally made an offer of employment to
her,
which she accepted. Within a month she realized that her stock had
plummeted--she was now in the same lowly position other employees were
in, and
the manager is relying on another consultant.
Advancement opportunities are limited, especially in IT. There are,
however,
opportunites for lateral moves and training is made available to those
who ask
or
show some interest.
The other frustrating aspect of the company is the German propensity to
override
perfectly good strategy put in place by the North American executive
team with
nonsensical plans whose primary purpose seems to be protecting or
expanding the
dominion of a European executive.
