The overall business outlook was a major problem at this company. I was
hired right at the beginning of the dot com plunge, so my boss actually
became a slave to his fear of going under. At the time we had a lot of
dot com clients, so he was so worried about paying the bills that he cut
corners anywhere he could, including all of our marketing and
advertising. Without any self promotion, the company wasn't going to get
any new business, but I failed to be able to get that across to my boss.
The situation was further perpetuated by the events of 9/11 which only
supported his fears and sent the company into deeper turmoil. His
parinoia caused him to drastically lower his prices because he felt it
was the only way to keep clients coming in. As a result, we all ended up
working more hours and getting paid less. One employee left the company
to pursue better options. A few months later, 50% of the employees left
to seek better situations. Morale continually got worse as the remaining
employees got more and more burn out. I eventually left, and to this
day, the company is only left with 2-3 employees.
