The culture of this American business icon is in transition. Once self-
confident and brimming with pride, Coke is not "it" as much as it was.
A huge leadership void was created when Roberto Goizueta died and his
hand-picked successor Doug Ivester resigned suddenly. Current CEO Doug
Daft is not nearly as personable as his predecessors, and has presided
over two large layoffs (massacres) during the past 3 years. His
employee credibility was severely damaged by his botched Gatorade
acquisition which ended up as Pepsi's. Stock options, once the core of
Coke's compensation system, are mostly underwater for all rank and file
employees. Morale is very low, and politics are more intense (bloody)
than ever. Newcomer Steve Heyer is still an unknown, but lacks
charisma and seems to prefer outsiders to Coke veterans. Internal
employee engagement scores are in the 40% range. Lawsuits over racial
discrimination and by a disgruntled employee laid off in 2003 have
caused more distractions and negative feelings internally. Consultants
roam the halls looking for silver bullets. The fix is going to take
time, and the right leadership who can face tough issues.
