The City of Chicago Corporation Counsel's Office is a wonderful place to
work. Not only is the work interesting, but the people are public
service minded and the atmosphere collegial. The office is organized
into twelve divisions, each specializing in a different kind of law from
traffic court to federal court. The office handles all aspects of
municipal law. People in the office work hard and often put in long
hours; however, there is an understanding and fostering of family
committments. The minimum hours each day are from nine in the morning
until five in the evening, although it's not unusual at all to find many
people, especially lawyers, working long into the night when they're on
trial or have a deal closing. Each division in the office manages its
own schedule and has its own work rules. Dress codes vary by division
although every individual is expected to dress professionally. Many
divisions have a relaxed dress code on Fridays and on days when no
trials or deals are schedules or when no members of the public will be
present. The dress code in City Hall, where some of our offices are
located, is more formal. Most individuals in City Hall wear suits
daily. The opportunities to advance in the office are good. The
divisions are run by deputies, the highest ranking attorneys in the
office, followed by chiefs, then senior counsels. Paralegals can also
advance through the ranks from Paralegal I to Paralegal II to
Supervising Paralegal. Secretaries similarly can advance if their
skills are good. All in all, the office is an exciting place. The Law
Department touches almost every issue confronting the City so we get our
hands in a lot of things affecting the citizens of Chicago. We all live
in the City so it's especially nice to feel a sense of accomplishment
after a days work.
