Citizens ranks highly in terms of benefits but is mediocre in many other
areas. While it has expanded rapidly over the years, it is still a
small town company trying to make it in the big leagues. It offers
benefits usually offered only by larger companies (adoption assistance,
homebuyer program, traditional pension plan, liberal vacation/holidays,
etc.) but there is little opportunity for advancement and the company
still operates with the mentality it's a small New England bank.
Citizens wants to do the right thing in terms of employee relations but
frequently its efforts fall short.
While Citizens is a fairly large company, each state bank operates
independently. In effect, you work for one of the much smaller state
bank subsidiaries, and there's no ladder to climb -- or it's very
short. There's also a prevailing attitude that "this is how we do it.
Don't suggest changes because we don't care. If you don't like it,
leave."
Management is good in some areas, but very weak in others. And at least
one executive management-level manager has a reputation for verbally
abusing employees. Several other senior managers were hired primarily
because of their personal connections and are nothing more than public
faces for the bank. Appearances matter very much so at Citizens; good
PR is a driving factor of almost every decision. Diversity is highly
valued -- more so than any other company I know -- but one has to wonder
how genuine the company is, or again, is it just for appearances sake.
Salaries are below average and the company is in the midst of a major
cost cutting initiative. Company cars and bonuses were eliminated for
many employees, which had a major impact on their overall compensation,
and no other adjustments were made to compensate them for this. Pay is
below average -- it's also not uncommon for the company to put employees
in a lower salary grade than they are entitled to with the promise it
will be upgraded in the "near future" for at least a year.
On the whole, the company means well, but it's execution needs work. It
seems committed to becoming an employer of choice, but it my mind, it
has a ways to go.
