I was acquired from CableRep Advertising when Charter Media began their
efforts in the Tri-Cities TN/VA market in 2001.
As a producer/director I cannot complain about much at all. The working
environment in my dept. is very fair, balanced, and opportune.
The dress code is semi-professional, yet relaxed for us guys who get
outdoors often shooting video in the elements.
As far as opportunities for advancement, we're a little lackluster here.
Charter pays it's production dept. well, so we have little turnover.
However, Charter provides us weekly with an advanced schedule of job
openings across the company, and we're given first bite at them.
I came from working sporadic hours at a local network affiliate as a
production asst./videographer working weekends, even being on-call on my
days off for a very poor salary.
I moved to where I am now with solid hours, flexible time to take care
of personal issues when and if they arise, and a very fair working
environment.
However, there is a bit of a down-side. Those account executives out
selling the airtime for the cable commercials we produce are under a
heavy iron fist by management to meet budgets. Their jobs are held over
their heads almost every Monday morning meeting. I've seen several
account executives come and go due to varying circumstances, sometimes
no fault of their own.
The General Manager here is very conservative and rules our office "Old
School" style for lack of a better term. Most of the time he stays out
of the production dept.'s way, but can interfere negatively sometimes.
Incentives could be improved in the production dept. The account
executives receive commission off the work WE do in THIS dept. We have
way to earn bonuses or extra cash for extra work. That's my BIGGEST
COMPLAINT.
Overall, however, I'm happier working here in my current position than
I've ever been. Just need a worthwhile incentive program for the
production dept.
