The culture at Schwab has traditionally been very collaborate/consensus-
driven (e.g. you cannot be a maverick but must always get "buy-in" from
multiple constituencies). However, as Schwab seeks to be a mature and
efficient firm, the need for consensus is giving way for the need to
make quick and prudent decisions - thus increased structure, process and
hierarchy are beginning to take shape. This is actually a good thing, as
the constant need for consensus was often frustrating. The need to
interface with many groups will not go away, however, as the company
continues to be very matrixed in its organizational structure. Thus,
relational/relationship-building skills are essential for
advancement/success.
The workforce is incredibly diverse from a racial and sexual orientation
standpoint. Dress code can range from casual at headquarters (especially
in the technology groups) to business casual or formal in the field
(branches and sales professionals) where client contact is required.
Hours at headquarters are incredibly humane: most people arrive between
8 and 9am and leave between 5 & 6pm. Working at home is permitted though
becoming more difficult to set up from an infrastructure standpoint.
