When I started at SCH, it was a great place to work. We were growing, I
had a lot to learn and I was young and impressionable. As the market
started rocking in the late '90's, there was constant pressure to work
OT and give up any life you had outside of the company. The company
started believing they could do no wrong. People were only promoting
their friends as a reward for blindly following an inept leader. The
more you looked busy and the less you did, the better you were
perceived. Don't you dare say what you think or you are not a team
player! Diversity is big at Schwab, but it has to be the right kind of
diversity. It certainly isn't diversity of ideas. The hours are 40 a
week right now. They can approve OT from time to time unless you are in
a position that is exempt from OT, then you work until the job is done.
The job is never done. Don't ever expect to get a holiday off if you
are in a client contact position. They close for Thanksgiving and
Christmas, but since Christmas is on a Saturday this year, there is no
Christmas paid holiday. Dress code is very casual-- no shorts or T-
shirts, but jeans are okay. Just look at what you manager wears and his
boss, and wear that. People like people who are like them. There are
NO opportunities for advancement unless you are hired by a fraternity
brother at the VP level or higher. In all seriousness, many people are
chronically ill who work there. It may be the level of stress or
something in the building, but strange things have been happening. One
person lost all of her eyelashes. Many others have had chronic
breathing problems that have required sinus surgeries. Others have
constant digestive problems. There have been other strange things that
can't really be diagnosed. People who have been there for a while end
up with little or no immune system.
